Do you know what is swapfile.sys and why is it used? Basically, swapfile.sys is a type of virtual memory file in Windows 8, 8.1 and 10. You will see it in the same folder of pagefile.sys and hiberfil.sys. But why do windows need both types of virtual memory on the system?
When Microsoft brings the new apps system on the windows 8, 8.1 and Windows 10, they made this type of memory. Actually, they have not described clearly about the swapfile.sys, but they have cleared in their forum discussion about this virtual memory. Basically, they want to work with the “Universal Apps” and Windows wanted to keep it from the pagefile.sys. With this in mind, they have created this swapfile.sys to work with it differently.
Difference between Swapfile.sys, Pagefile.sys and Hiberfil.sys:
You may feel in confusion about the different type of virtual memory file. I will give you simple definition to clarify the difference.
- Pagefile.sys: Pagefile.sys is the virtual memory which stays on the local hard drive and works to keep data of primary memory to make the processing time faster of the system.
- Hiberfil.sys: When you use hibernate on your PC, it needs to keep all the data on the system to bring it on your hand when reopening it and it stays on the hiberfil.sys.
- Swapfile.sys: Swapfile is being used for operating and handling the new app system of windows 8, 8.1 and 10. We may some other types of use on this type of virtual memory on the next update or edition.
What is Swapfile.sys in details:
You have seen that Microsoft has brought the app-based operating system in the latest windows of 8, 8.1 and 10 and they are keeping the user’s data of universal apps including Windows Store apps, Metro apps, Modern apps, Windows 8 apps, Windows 8-style UI apps in this virtual memory.
Though Windows can use the pagefile.sys, but it has made the different store to make it standard. So, we can tell, Windows want to work with it in the larger area later. With this in mind, we can call it as the new system of virtual memory file on Windows 8 and Windows 10.
Is it necessary to delete the file of swapfile.sys or the benefits:
Sometimes, the Windows 8 and Windows 10 users ask, if they can delete the file or if swapfile.sys can do any harm or benefits to the system? Actually, swapfile.sys cannot do any harm to the system because it takes only 256MB from the Drive.
But if you are using very low memory or if you are using windows based tablet, then you can delete. It will not do any harm to your OS. I will not recommend you to do it, but you can do it if you think it is necessary.
How Can You Delete the Swapfile.sys:
Important to realize, you can delete the swapfile by following the same method of deleting the pagefile.sys. When you are doing the no paging file for pagefile.sys, the swapfile is automatically deleted. You can see the procedures for deleting pagefile.sys from here. For making the process easier, I am describing the basic steps here too. Let’s learn how you can delete the swapfile.sys within several steps.
Step 01: Go to Performance Options
Open the start menu and search by typing “Appearance” or “Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows”, it will show you and bring the “Performance Options.” (See the below screenshot). Though you can go from the control panel or My PC’s Properties options.
Step 02: Now go to the Advanced Tab and click change.
Step 03: Now uncheck/unmark the “Automatically manage paging file size for all drives”
(See the screenshot of step 04)
Step 04. Now click on the No Paging File and set as Yes.
Step 05. Now reboot the system and it will not keep any memory for Swapfile.sys.
Can I restore the Swapfile.sys:
You may ask again if you can restore the swapfile.sys. And Yes! You can restore the swapfile.sys. Here you will need to follow the step 3 to 5. That means, you have to check or mark the “Automatically manage paging file size for all drives” and now it will automatically uncheck the no page file, that means when you will reboot the PC, it will start to manage the swap file again.
Hope you have understood the method and you will be able to delete or restore the swapfile easily.
Editor’s Note from TechyPi:
I think now you are clear about what is Swapfile or swapfile.sys. At the same time, you will be able easily to restore or delete the swapfile.sys from the windows based system.
